Hi! I'm Lucy, and today I'm going to tell you the most delicious story in the world: how my Uncle Paco saved us from the hungriest Sunday of our lives with his magic treats.
The Sunday of the Great Disaster
It was Sunday morning, and we woke up really late. Raquel and I went down to the kitchen very hungry, but Mom was looking very worried, opening and closing all the cupboards.
"There's no bread!" she told us. "There are only two slices left, and there are five of us. Dad forgot to go to the supermarket yesterday, and to make matters worse, today is a holiday in town, and all the shops are closed."
The SOS Call to Uncle Paco
Dad had a brilliant idea: "I'm going to call my brother Paco! He always has magical solutions for everything."
He explained the situation on the phone, and then we heard Uncle Paco's cheerful voice on the other end: "Don't worry! Do you have flour at home?"
"Yes," said Dad.
"Perfect. I'll bring the rest, and in half an hour, we'll all be eating the most delicious treats in the universe. And while I'm at it, I'll teach the kids how to make them."
The Arrival of the Super Chef Hero
And there arrived our Uncle Paco with a huge smile and a very strange metal contraption in his hand!
"Hello, my favorite chefs!" he said. "Who wants to learn the secret of the perfect churros?"
I jumped off my chair. I wanted to learn! Raquel hid behind Mom because she was still very little, and Carlos said churros were "old people food" (my brother is so silly sometimes!).
Uncle Paco's Magic Lesson
Uncle Paco put a stool next to him for me, and the magic began.
First, we put flour in a large bowl. "Three tablespoons per person," he explained as we counted: Mom, Dad, Raquel, Carlos, you, and me. "Six times three, eighteen tablespoons."
But Uncle Paco added two more. "Always a little extra, Lucy. If there's any left over, Thor will take care of finishing it," he winked at me, looking at our dog.
The Moment of Truth
We added salt, baking powder, and water little by little. I stirred and stirred until the dough was perfect. It was like a science experiment!
Meanwhile, Mom heated sunflower oil in the large frying pan. "Why sunflower and not olive oil?" I asked Uncle Paco.
"Because olive oil has a lot of flavor of its own, Lucy. For churros, we need a more neutral one that lets the flavor of the dough shine."
Magic in Action!
Uncle Paco filled the churro maker (that metal thing that looked like a giant syringe) with our perfect dough. Then he started to squeeze and... WOW!
The dough came out making perfect spirals in the hot oil. It was like watching an artist painting with food! The churros turned golden brown, and the smell filled the whole kitchen.
Even Carlos came over and said: "Okay, that's cool."
The Happiest Breakfast in the World
In ten minutes, the table was full of steaming, golden churros. Mom had prepared hot chocolate, and Dad was even smiling after all the morning's trouble.
When I tasted my first churro dipped in chocolate... it was like biting into a crunchy cloud full of happiness!
The Sweetest Ending
Since that day, every time Uncle Paco comes over, I ask him to make churros with me. And now I know that when I grow up and have my own children, I will teach them Uncle Paco's magic churros.
Because some things are taught with hands, with the heart, and with lots of hot chocolate.
